A Sense of Place and Planting with Town of Atrisco

Garden at the Town of Atrisco’s Office

In 2014, EEANM partnered with the Town of Atrisco Grant to offer training and networking with local organizations that are engaged in community or school gardens and related activities. This program seeks to expand participants’ networks and capabilities by creating opportunities for learning and collaboration.

In April, the Consortium hosted a workshop using Project Learning Tree’s secondary module, Places We Live. We headed to the garden in June to build community and get our hands dirty.

Travis weaving a basket.

Travis will teach youth how to weave their own upcycled baskets.

Our basket weaving workshop in December was a lively event. Participants turned many yards of used irrigation drip tape into sturdy baskets. Many of the workshoppers plan to take the skill to their classrooms to share with students. Want to try this yourself? Tiana Baca from Desert Oasis Teaching Garden wrote up step-by-step instructions and shares them with pictures from the workshop.

Culture, Community and Caring with SWOP

In 2013, we partnered with the Southwest Organizing Project and held meetings on the following topics:

  • School and Community Gardens
  • Cultural Competency with a focus on teaching people with disabilities
  • Community Environmental Education Guidelines
  • Creating a Farmers Market from a School Garden
  • Ethics of Caring for the Earth
